The importance of being able to express yourself
One of the other new things I have started in my life is to go for singing lessons. I had always wanted to go but was very afraid of being told, to put it bluntly that I was ‘crap.’ After facing this fear, I have realised that I can actually sing. Now it’s just a matter of training and refining my true voice. Singing for me awakens and helps me express deeper aspects of me. It is showing me parts of myself which I had locked away and so this is completely liberating.
Before going for my singing lessons, I never really understood the art of singing. We have two vocal cords and then two false vocal cords to the sides of this. People sometimes sing wanting to sound like someone else or to copy a song and this causes the false vocal cords to grow over the true vocal cords. When we sing from our throat, which also has this same effect and therefore restricts the vocal cords, we are not singing correctly. Your true voice is distorted and you may find yourself sounding ‘crap’. The art of singing is all in the mind, in the impulse in your head, as my teacher puts it. Singing takes a lot of coordination as you need to be aware of what you are thinking, feeling and where your attention is in the body. You need to be aware of any fears so that you can squash them as they will negatively affect your voice. You need to be breathing into your diaphragm and not into your chest. It’s about being open in all ways, in all areas in your body in order for the breath to flow freely over your true vocal cords and to come out as your individual sound. When you place your attention in your mind and allow the air to flow freely over your vocal cords, amazing sounds and incredible feelings are produced. Together with this it’s also about just letting it out and giving it all that you’ve got.
And so it is in life, when you are open, fully aware of where your attention is, breathing down into your being, basically being completely present in your self, then you are able to express yourself easier and embrace more of your truth. When you put 100% of yourself into life and let yourself be seen no matter what anyone says it liberates you and allows you to express who you are in deeper and more connected ways. When you fear something, part of your being closes down. When you are not open, your true self cannot be free to express and move with the flow of life. Sometimes people worry about what others will think and so close up in the fear of sounding stupid or not good enough. Some people are afraid of expressing their true voice and so do what is accepted in society in order to feel accepted. My teacher reminds me that it’s not how I sound to myself, but how it feels. When we are listening to how we feel inside, we will know what feels good to us. When something is resonating with our truth, it will feel great. When we are out of tune with our being and not connected to soul, it won’t feel so good. To be in sync in the body, mind, heart and in the soul, you are able to produce awesome music, song and therefore an unbelievable expression of your individual being. When you let your own unique sound come out by being completely open and honest with who you are, no matter what, you are expressing your unique being, your magnificence, your voice. This is completely liberating.
So I’d like to ask you a few questions:
• Are you expressing yourself fully, in the ways that you need to in order to feel free?
• What are you drawn to do in your life but are not doing because of fear?
• What do you need to do today to liberate your soul and completely embrace who you are?
It is so fundamental to the health and fulfilment of ones whole being to be able to be free to be who you are, to express your true voice. Be bold and brave. Delve deeper into yourself to unlock that which will help you to feel freer and more in line with your truth.
