If today was your last day

Are you living today as if it were your last? This might seem like a strange question, but bear with me and you’ll understand the significance.

Listening to “If today was your last day” by Nickelback one morning really started my thinking process (which can be dangerous sometimes). I asked myself, what would I do if today was my last day. It made me think of being on holiday. I find that when I am on holiday, I particularly seem to take so much more of everything in. I walk around really experiencing the beauty of the scenery, enjoying the space and place I am in, and all the benefits of being on holiday. I feel absolute gratitude for being able to be on holiday and to have the experience.  And so, I feel that if today was my last day, I would do the same – take in as much of everything as I can and feel complete gratitude for all I have, for all that I accomplished and experienced.

Living each day as if it was your last would encourage you to engage in your life more fully. It’s easy to become complacent and procrastinate, saying tomorrow is another day but if there’s a choice between embracing all the good we have now, why wait for tomorrow. Living today as if it was your last brings you into the now and when you live in the now, you leave the past behind and trust that the future will take care of itself so you can experience so much more.

Ask yourself these questions:

•    If today was my last day, how would I choose to live it? What would I focus on?
•    What would I change in my life if today was my last day?
•    Who would I express unsaid words and feelings to?
•    How would I embrace the challenges of the day?
•    What can I do to feel more fulfilled and more joyful today?

Exercise:

Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths into your body and then focus on breathing into your heart area. Spend some quiet time reflecting on what you have in your life which makes you happy. Give thanks for every little thing which brings you joy and feel the gratitude in your heart. Allow the feeling of gratitude to spread throughout your body and spend as much time as you can really embracing this feeling of joy, love and thankfulness.

There’s nothing stopping you from living every day as if it were your last and thereby living life to its fullest. You have the power to create any reality you choose so start now by embracing your day with gusto and choose to live it with that which you really want in your life.

I thought I would end off this with Nickelback’s song. Words which make you think...

“My best friend gave me the best advice
He said each day's a gift and not a given right
Leave no stone unturned, leave your fears behind
And try to take the path less traveled by
That first step you take is the longest stride

If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last
Leave old pictures in the past?
Donate every dime you had, if today was your last day?
What if, what if, if today was your last day?

Against the grain should be a way of life
What's worth the price is always worth the fight
Every second counts 'cause there's no second try
So live like you're never living twice
Don't take the free ride in your own life

If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last?
Leave old pictures in the past?
Donate every dime you had?

And would you call those friends you never see?
Reminisce old memories?
Would you forgive your enemies?
And would you find that one you're dreaming of?
Swear up and down to God above
That you'd finally fall in love if today was your last day?

If today was your last day
Would you make your mark by mending a broken heart?
You know it's never too late to shoot for the stars
Regardless of who you are

So do whatever it takes
'Cause you can't rewind a moment in this life
Let nothing stand in your way
'Cause the hands of time are never on your side

If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late
Could you say goodbye to yesterday?
Would you live each moment like your last?
Leave old pictures in the past?
Donate every dime you had?

And would you call those friends you never see?
Reminisce old memories?
Would you forgive your enemies?
And would you find that one you're dreaming of
Swear up and down to God above
That you'd finally fall in love if today was your last day?”
